Maha Lakshmi Bless You with Money, Wealth and Prosperity

Vara Maha Lakshmi vrata is one of the auspicious vrata or fasting for women in India. “Vara” means boon and maha lakshmi is goddess of wealth who bless her devotee with wealth, prosperity, health and happiness. In one sense, Varalakshmi is one who grants boons. In another, she is the Goddess who is invited into the home and honored.Vara maha lakshmi vrata is the vrata or fasting observed by women on the Friday immediately preceding the full moon day of the month of Sravan.

According to legend, maha lakshmi incarnates in eight forms and those who perform the vratam or fasting, goddess blesses them and their family with money, wealth, health, success and prosperity. This year vara maha lakshmi vrata is observed on July 31, 2009, Friday, all over the country.

Legend

According to Skanda purana, Goddess Parvati has once asked Lord Siva about a vratam, performing which would render the women on the earth blessed with all kinds of wealth and happiness. Then did Lord Siva preach of “Vara Lakshmi Vratam” to be performed on a Friday that comes just before the full moon day in the month of Sravanam. Illustrating the sanctity of the vratam, Lord Siva narrated the story of Charumati of Maratha desa,

Charumati lived in the Maratha kingdom. Pious lady, she indulged in whole hearted worship of the Goddess and took good care of her family- respectful to her in-laws, loving and caring her husband and children. One day she dreamt about Goddess Lakshmi telling her to perform the puja. She, with the consent of her family performed this Vratam and informs other ladies too. With the blessings of the Goddess she, her family and friends will be bestowed with success and wealth. Hence forth they shared their luck many more people.

Festival

The Vrata is observed on the Friday immediately preceding the full moon day of the month of Sravan. After a purificatory bath, the lady should put on a clean, fresh cloth and make a mandala with the drawing of a lotus upon it. A kalasha filled with rice and topped with fresh mango leaves, a coconut and cloth are placed on the mandala and Lakshmi is invoked therein. Fresh grains are used in the worship as they convey the idea of growth and prosperity.

After the worship of the kalasha, follows the worship of Ganesha, then the worship of the raksha or the sacred thread. Now the main worship of Vara Lakshmi begins and the raksha is worshiped a second time. It is then tied to the right hand of the lady. After the worship various auspicious articles are given as charity to some deserving lady whose husband is alive. This lady is also fed with dainties.

Lakshmi is goddess of wealth and bless her devotees with wealth, prosperity and happiness. According to legend, maha lakshmi incarnates in eight forms.
