Recently I read an article in sarjapur-road.com which says “Ninety per cent of snakes found in Bangalore are harmless.” Before reading the article, I also thought like others that snakes in our yard and building is very dangerous and we should kill them for the safety of others. But after reading the article, I got some information such as Snakes do not ordinarily prey on humans unless the snake is startled or injured, more than 300 species of snakes in India out of which 80 % are non-poisonous, only 4 types of snakes in India are venomous etc.
This actually led me to search for more information on snakes and think on how can we give a chance for snakes to survive. Another article by IDA India led me to write this information for you. It is not just human and our pets who lost or affected by floods or heavy raining, but the snakes in the city have also become helpless victims. By learning to identify difference between venomous and non-venomous snake, you can allow non-venomous snakes to live in your surroundings, and maintain the balance in ecosystem. Don’t kill venomous snakes but you can call experts, forest cell rescue team or NGOs including volunteers protecting the animals.
Snakes serve an important role as predators in the ecosystems, and snakes are signs of a healthy ecosystem. Don’t try to handle a snake if you don’t have any formal training in doing so. Its always better to call an expert than traditional snake charmers. Once the snake is spotted, one should keep a watch on it from a safe distance.
If you see a snake in your vicinity:
- Do not get scared unnecessarily
- If the snake is not stuck somewhere, leave him alone and let him find his way out.
- Do not disturb or kill the snake by sticks, if found in your building.
- Do not handle snakes on your own.
- Call Expert, Rescue team or Pest Control Company
By learning to identify difference between venomous and non-venomous snake, you can allow non-venomous snakes to live in your surroundings and give venomous snake a fair chance of survival by leaving them in forest or handover to rescue team.
