Gowri Habba Celebration 2010

Gowri Habba or Gowri vrata is a Hindu festival celebrated a day before Ganesh Chaturthi.Swarna Gouri habba 2010 date is September 10. As the name suggests, Swarna Gauri Habba is dedicated to Goddess Gauri, the consort of Lord Shiva. On the day of Gowri Habba, Goddess Gowri is welcomed to her parents house. On next day, Lord Ganesh visits his mother and takes her back to Kailash.

Godess Gowri is the symbolization of Sumangali. Hence all married women and young girls of marriageable age offer prayers every year for Dheerga (long ) sumangalya, for the health and long life of the husband.

On the Gowri Habba day, the house is cleaned thoroughly. After bathing married women and young girls in the family dress up neatly.A small temporary shrine is erected using banana leaves and banana stem. This is decorated with mango leaves, turmeric, tulsi and sandalwood paste. Then they do the ‘sthapana’ of either jala-gauri or arishinada-gauri (a symbolic idol of Gowri made of turmeric).
