Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program brings hope in children

Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program is an incentive for children to continue their education. Akshaya Patra is feeding over 5 lakh children in Karnataka in five locations-Bangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Bellary, Mysore and Mangalore. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is the largest non-profit organisation in the world to implement the school meal program.

Akshaya Patra's mid-day meal program

Close to 13.5 million underprivileged children in India are out of school and into child labor in order to earn a single meal in a day. Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program helps underprivileged children by providing them with a healthy, balanced meal that they would otherwise have to work for.

Akshaya Patra Foundation started Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program from the inspiration of A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada who saw a group of children fighting with street dogs over scraps of food and the incident led Swami to determination that no one within a ten mile radius of their center should go hungry. With that vision Akshaya Patra Foundation started Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program in Bangalore by feeding 1500 children in 5 schools. Now the Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program expanded to 18 locations across 8 states in India to feed over 1.2 million children.

The vision of Akshaya Patra Foundation is that “No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.” The Akshay Patra Foundation is a wonderful organization and govt has offered its support by granting 100% tax benefits to the donors.

The Mid-day Meal program is conducted in the Private-Public Partnership model within the guidelines of the government. There are many other NGOs providing mid-day meals in the country but Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program not only provide children with much needed nutrition, but also encourage them in their education. For ten years Akshaya Patra has worked to provide underprivileged children in India. Now Akshaya Patra Foundation targets to serve 5 million (50 lakh) children by 2020.

Many of Akshaya Patra’s donors also sponsor a child on a regular basis either monthly, quarterly or annually. A contribution of just Rs. 525 will help to feed a child for a year. Akshaya Patra Foundation has also started their online donation program where people can contribute their donations online.

On the Shashti day Lord Subramanya or Lord Muruga has destroyed Sura Padman, the super-demon. It is believed that the demon Sura Padman was destroyed at Tiruchendur one among the six sacred bastions. On this day devotees immerse themselves reading stories and sing Bhajans and Kirtans / Devotional songs of Lord Subramanya. People worship the snake mound with great devotion. They worship the mound with all the pooja items and pour milk into the mound. It is believed that offering milk to snake on this day will protect thier family and bless with prosperity.

Skanda Shashti is the festival to commemorate the victory of Lord Subramanya. The deity, Lord Subrahmanya is taken in a palanquin through the city streets, with the music of trumpets, drums and tradition musical instruments. The word “Shashti” comes from the Sanskrit cardinal ShaRh (six), whence the ordinal number (linguistics) ShaShTha (sixth). During Skanda Shashti devotees avoid non-vegetarian food and some even avoid onion and garlic in their food.

Champa Shashti is celebrated on sixth day of the Margsheersh Shukla Paksh. This year Champa Shashti is on 11th December, 2010.

May Lord Subramanya Swamy shower His blessings on you.

Big chill leaves Bangalore shivering

Officially, winter is yet to set in.Weathermen warn Bangaloreans to keep shawls and pullovers handy, for the days will grow chillier. The temperature will dip further once the low-pressure build-up dissipates. The lowest temperature this month — 17.1 degree Celsius — was recorded on December 4 and 5.

The coldest Decembers in the past five years were 2007 (11.8 degree Celsius), 2005 (13.6 degree), 2008 (13.9 degree), 2006 (14.2 degree) and 2009 (15 degree).

The finger-curling chill is due to a low-pressure build-up off the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts. The weather is also due to a sky overcast with clouds, leading to minimal solar radiation. This is an annual phenomenon, but this time of greater intensity. The rest of the state was quite warm, with coastal Karnataka recording 30 degrees and other areas averaging 25-28 degrees.
