Bengal’s first woman chief minister

Trinamool Congress chief and former Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee was sworn in as Bengal’s first woman chief minister on Friday afternoon — the fourteenth woman chief minister in the country to warm that chair.

Mamata became the first non-Marxist chief minister of Bengal after 34 years — almost a generation — ending a near 20-year struggle to enter the Writers’ Buildings, the very corridors from which she was once thrown out during a sit-in protest in front of late chief minister Jyoti Basu’s room.
